Case Study: Kubernetes Migration Optimization

The Client: Major Recruiting Platform

Date: 2023

Project Lead: Tyler Fischella

Summary

The client was in the process of migrating its global fleet of workloads from App Engine (both Standard and Flex) to Kubernetes containers.

Customer Challenge

They estimated that approximately 90% of their existing workloads would be moved, with some transitioning to Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and others to Amazon EKS. To maximize the proportion of workloads that remained on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), it was essential to optimize the migration process by reducing friction, enhancing operability, and delivering on strategic features.

Project Deliverables

Collaborated cross-functionally with both the GKE product team and the client’s infrastructure team to develop introductory content and execute a joint hands-on lab and workshop for cluster operators.

  1. Identified topics of interest through customer meetings, quarterly business reviews (QBRs), and feature request activities.

  2. Tailored a series of seven multi-cloud workshops with the Anthos solution team and the client to facilitate knowledge sharing and strategic discussions, given the client's interest in leveraging aspects of Anthos within their in-house built service mesh environment.

Impact

Project team efforts in supporting the client’s GKE migration were ongoing.

  1. Completed workshops were well received, especially by the infrastructure team engaged in strategic, high-level discussions and who jointly led the Kubernetes workshop.

  2. The client expressed a desire to continue partnering with the GKE and Anthos teams, including:

    • Conducting an Anthos proof of concept (POC).

    • Developing GKE best practices for their cluster operators.

  3. The joint workshop attracted over 100 client engineers, generating significant interest in the recording from those who could not attend, as well as from leadership planning to distribute it to new onboarding engineers.
