Representing Google Cloud at the Enterprise Data Management Council (EDMC)
At Google Cloud, I have been deeply committed to responsible innovation, ensuring that our data and AI solutions are developed and deployed ethically, transparently, and securely.
This commitment is reflected in my ongoing effort to champion data and AI governance, both internally and in collaboration with customers.
In 2023, Google Cloud released an architectural whitepaper and accompanying source code for a solution which successfully completed an assessment facilitated by KPMG LLP and has been accredited by the Enterprise Data Management Council (EDM Council) as a Cloud Data Management Capabilities (CDMC) Certified Cloud Solution. The architecture, which includes Google Cloud’s BigQuery and Dataplex Data Catalog, has been validated against CDMC’s control framework and can be used by new or existing Google Cloud clients wanting to migrate their sensitive data to the cloud with greater confidence.
The CDMC framework, developed and published by EDM Council, provides a set of data management capabilities, standards, and best practices for securing their cloud implementations. Contributors to the framework include large global enterprises across regulated industries, major cloud service providers, technology service organizations, and advisory firms.
Re-joining the Enterprise Data Management Council (EDMC)
I am thrilled to announce our re-engagement with the Enterprise Data Management Council (EDM Council), a leading global association dedicated to advancing data management principles and practices.
To ensure continued transparency, accountability, privacy, fairness, and security are encouraged at global scale, I curated a proposal for re-join the Enterprise Data Management Council. The EDM Council provides a valuable platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing, bringing together industry leaders, experts, and practitioners.
In October 2024, the proposal to re-join the EDMC was approved by the Dataplex product team.
This ongoing partnership with the EDM Council isn't just about collaboration; it also gives Google Cloud an opportunity to learn and identify upcoming data and AI governance standards. We've been granted two seats on their executive board – a primary seat and an alternate seat. I'll be filling the alternate seat, which means I'll be taking notes and representing Google Cloud's perspective.
Through this partnership, I aim to:
Contribute to the development of industry standards and frameworks: We will actively participate in the EDM Council's initiatives to develop and promote data & AI governance standards and frameworks.
Share our expertise and best practices: We will share our knowledge and experience in data and AI governance with the EDM Council community, contributing to the collective wisdom of the cloud industry.
Learn from other industry leaders: We will engage with other EDM Council members to learn from their experiences and best practices, continuously improving our own data and AI governance framework.
Promote responsible data and AI innovation: We will work with the EDM Council to advocate for responsible data and AI innovation, ensuring that these technologies are used for good.
My commitment to Data and AI governance extends beyond Google.
Developing data and AI governance policies and standards.
Conducting data and AI risk assessments.
Implementing data and AI security controls.
Training employees on data and AI governance.
Designing and deploying new data & AI ontologies.
Data and AI are transforming our world, and strong governance is more important than ever. I'm proud to be part of a team that's leading the charge in responsible innovation. My proactive approach is essential to prevent a dystopian future where data and AI is used for surveillance, manipulation, or limitation of human freedoms.
Self-governance and aligning to new industry regulations empowers present and future potential of data and AI, while safeguarding morale and functional values in society.
Our partnership with the EDM Council is a big step forward, and I'm excited to see what we can achieve together. By collaborating and sharing our knowledge, we can build a data-driven world that's both innovative and trustworthy. We can unlock innovation, while staying true to protecting everyone's interests.
